Our Approach

Navigating life's challenges alone is difficult yet few support systems exist for men. Many men find traditional talk therapy doesn't resonate fully. Horizon For Men offers a practical, solution-oriented approach, focusing on tangible strategies and skills development alongside emotional support, specifically designed to address the unique challenges men face. Horizon For Men was started to address the areas that traditional therapies fail to properly address and resolve men's problems.

The Problem

Traditional therapy models focus on helping men feel heard and seen but often fail to provide practical solutions and strategies towards restoring their sense of personal power.

Men Need Practical Solutions

Men need to be heard but they need practical solutions more. Without practical solutions to anchor their growth against, many men will continue down the path of depression based on feeling helpless, powerless, and unable to affect their life or environment.

The Answer

And this is the very reason I started Horizon For Men. A place where men can be heard. Find solutions to their problems. Restore their sense of personal power. And learn practical techniques to better handle life’s future challenges.

The First Step

If you are a man struggling with relationships, divorce, co-parenting, depression, stress and anxiety...you've found the right place. Schedule a free consultation to talk today!

Hello! I'm John Souchak,

I am a father, divorced father, co-parent, son, brother, and friend. Okay, that sounds a bit like the first line of a cheesy poem, but I say that because you need to know who you are dealing with here.

Therapy is about trust. Part of trust comes from knowing you’re working with a trained professional, but you also want to know who your therapist is as a person and the common ground you might share.

Trust is especially important when talking about navigating relationships. And I’ve had them all – some joyous, some painful. But all of them helped me grow, gain wisdom, and be a better person and therapist.

I’m a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT), practicing since 2012. My master’s degree was in depth counseling from Pacifica Graduate. Before pursuing therapy, I studied English, earning a Master of Arts from Colorado State.

I also had a long tech career, working for several startup software companies, the US Forest Service, IBM, and Google.

I have been a teacher at the community college and university level and have done tutoring and volunteer work in hospitals.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should I expect on a FREE Consultation?

Our brief, no-pressure free consultation is a 15-20 minute call for us to connect. You can expect a safe space to briefly discuss your concerns, ask me questions about my approach and services, and get a sense of whether we might be a good fit. I'll provide a general overview of how I can help, and we can discuss potential next steps without any obligation to continue.

What should I expect at a therapy session?

Therapy sessions are typically 50 minutes in a collaborative and supportive environment focused on your goals. We'll explore your concerns, and I'll offer guidance and skill-building as needed to help you gain insight and develop coping strategies. While I provide expertise, the process is centered on your individual journey and progress, which we'll regularly check in on together.

Is confidentiality maintained in your sessions?

Yes, confidentiality is paramount. What you share in our sessions is kept private and not disclosed without your written consent. However, there are legal and ethical exceptions involving suspected child or dependent adult abuse, imminent threats of serious harm to yourself or others, and court orders, which I am obligated to follow and will openly discuss with you if they arise.

Who can benefit from your services?

Horizon For Men specializes in supporting men navigating divorce and breakups, including processing complex emotions and rebuilding their lives. We provide fatherhood guidance to address co-parenting challenges and improve relationships with children. Additionally, our couples therapy services focus on enhancing communication and resolving conflict. If you're a man dealing with these specific issues, we offer both online and in-person support, starting with a free consultation to determine the best approach

How are sessions structured?

Our sessions are designed to be client-centered and adaptable to your specific needs and goals. Typically, the initial sessions involve a thorough assessment of your current situation, history, and what you'd like to achieve in therapy. This helps us create a tailored treatment plan.  In ongoing sessions, we'll delve deeper into the issues you're facing, using evidence-based therapeutic techniques to facilitate healing, growth, and change. We'll work collaboratively to identify patterns, develop coping strategies, improve communication skills, and enhance your overall well-being. My approach focuses on providing practical solutions and restoring your sense of personal power while ensuring you feel heard and understood."

Can I attend sessions online?

Yes, absolutely. For many clients, attending sessions online offers greater convenience and accessibility, especially if you are located outside of the Santa Barbara area or find it easier to fit therapy/coaching into your schedule remotely. While my physical office is in Santa Barbara, my practice heavily skews towards online sessions, allowing me to connect with individuals and couples wherever they may be. We can discuss whether online therapy is the best option for your needs during our initial consultation.

How do I know if I need therapy or coaching?

Therapy involves exploring your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors to gain deeper self-awareness, address emotional distress, and work towards healing and symptom reduction. Coaching (e.g. divorce coaching) is a forward-focused process designed to help individuals navigate the practical and emotional challenges of separation and divorce. Coaching focuses on setting goals, developing coping strategies, improving communication skills, and creating a positive path forward.

How do I get started?

Getting started is easy. The best first step is to schedule a free 15-20 minute consultation. This allows us to briefly connect, for you to share what you're looking for, and for you to ask any questions you may have about my services and approach. You can easily contact me to arrange this consultation by [Insert Phone Number Here] or by sending me an email through the contact form on my website [Insert Website Link Here]. I look forward to hearing from you.

Where are you located?

I am located in Montecito, CA with offices in Santa Barbara, CA.

What is your hourly fee?

My standard hourly fee for individual therapy sessions is $325. For couples therapy, the hourly rate is $375. Please note that coaching services have a different fee structure based on the specific program and package you select, which we can discuss in detail during our consultation to determine the best fit for your needs and goals

Do you accept insurance?

As a therapist, I do not take insurance and am not on any insurance panels. Instead I produce superbills on an on-demand basis which can be submitted to insurance for reimbursement.

What forms of payment do you accept?

Depending upon whether you are interested in therapy or coaching, accepted payments will differ. Payment is typically processed at the time of service. If you have any questions or specific payment needs, please don't hesitate to discuss them with me.

What is your cancellation policy?

Our cancellation policy respects both your time and mine. I require 24 hours' notice if you need to cancel or reschedule your appointment. This allows me the opportunity to offer that time to another client who may need it. If you cancel with less than 24 hours' notice or fail to attend your scheduled session, you will be responsible for the full session fee. Of course, I understand that unforeseen circumstances can arise, and we can certainly discuss those situations as they occur.

How long is a typical session?

A typical therapy session is 50minutes and is typically weekly or bi-weekly. A coaching session may last 60-90 minutes with intermittent shorter check-ins depending on the specific program.

Do you take notes?

At times I may take some notes but this usually happens during the intake and initial sessions when working with a patient or client.
