Our Approach

Navigating life's challenges alone is difficult yet few support systems exist for men. Traditional therapy was designed for women and has never been updated to properly address men's issues. Horizon For Men was started to address the traditional therapies failure to properly address and resolve men's problems.

The Problem

Traditional therapy models focus on helping men feel heard and loved instead of providing practical solutions and restoring their sense of personal power.

Men Need Practical Solutions

Men need to be heard but they need practical solutions more. Without practical solutions, men will continue down the path of depression based on feeling helpless, powerless, and unable to affect their life or environment.

The Answer

And this is the very reason I started Horizon For Men. A place where men can be heard. Find solutions to their problems. Restore their sense of personal power. And learn practical techniques to better handle life’s future challenges.

The First Step

If you are a man struggling with relationships, divorce, co-parenting, depression, stress and anxiety...you've found the right place. Schedule a free consultation to talk today!

Hello! I'm John Souchak,

I am a father, divorced father, co-parent, son, brother, and friend. Okay, that sounds a bit like the first line of a cheesy poem, but I say that because you need to know who you are dealing with here.

Therapy is about trust. Part of trust comes from knowing you’re working with a trained professional, but you also want to know who your therapist is as a person and the common ground you might share.

Trust is especially important when talking about navigating relationships. And I’ve had them all – some joyous, some painful. But all of them helped me grow, gain wisdom, and be a better person and therapist.

I’m a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT), practicing since 2012. My master’s degree was in depth counseling from Pacifica Graduate. Before pursuing therapy, I studied English, earning a Master of Arts from Colorado State.

I also had a long tech career, working for several startup software companies, the US Forest Service, IBM, and Google.

I have been a teacher at the community college and university level and have done tutoring and volunteer work in hospitals.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should I expect on a FREE Consultation?

Horizon offers a free 30-minute consultation call with John Souchak, a licensed marriage and family therapist. On the call, you will share your background, challenges and the outcome you'd like to achieve. John will determine which of our programs best addresses your problems and prescribe your best course of treatment.

What should I expect at a therapy session?

Therapy sessions are 50 minutes. Therapy session will be conducted online via video call or in person at our Santa Barbara or Montecito office. Individual sessions will be attended by yourself and your therapist.

Couples therapy sessions are also 50 minutes and will be attended by you and your partner.

Is confidentiality maintained in your sessions?

Yes. We are committed to maintaining strict confidentiality in all our sessions to create a safe space for you to share and explore your challenges.

Who can benefit from your services?

Our individual therapy sessions are designed primarily for men and men with children who are struggling with life transitions, divorce, relationship challenges, or seeking to find joy and balance in their lives. Our couples therapy sessions benefit both men and their partner.

How are sessions structured?

Each session is 50 minutes. Each session is tailored to the individual's needs and goals to address specific issues and foster personal growth.

Can I attend sessions online?

Absolutely! We offer both online and in-person sessions to accommodate your schedule and comfort level.

How do I know if I need therapy or coaching?

If you're feeling overwhelmed by life challenges or past trauma, therapy may be beneficial. Coaching is ideal if you're looking for guidance on achieving specific goals or improving personal effectiveness.

How do I get started?

You can book a session here on our website or by calling our office. We’ll assess your needs and pair you with the right session and therapist to begin your journey.

Where are you located?

I offer in-person services in Santa Barbara and Montecito. I also offer online therapy to anyone with access to an internet connection.

What is your hourly fee?

The hourly fee is $250 for individuals and $325 for couples. Fees will be adjusted for shorter or longer sessions, if needed.

Do you accept insurance?

I do not bill insurance directly, so I’m considered “out of network.” There are many reasons for my status as an out-of-network provider, including a commitment to your privacy, freedom from having to declare a diagnosis, and the ability to design effective treatment plans without limitations. I provide what’s called a “Superbill” upon request for submitting an out-of-network reimbursement claim to your insurance company. Reimbursement varies across insurance plans, so you should call to confirm.

What forms of payment do you accept?

Payments are made via credit or debit card through Simple Practice, the online client management system for which you’ll register during intake. This payment method is secure and HIPAA-compliant. Individual payments are automatically debited within 24 hours after a given session.

What is your cancellation policy?

Please provide at least 24 hours notice for cancellation or rescheduling of your appointment. This allows me to offer the canceled time slot to another client. Cancellations that are made within 24 hours are charged 50% of the full fee. Appointments that are missed are charged the full fee.

How long is a typical session?

Sessions last 50 minutes, although at times we may need a few minutes to wrap up if we are in the middle of a process.

Do you take notes?

I will sometimes take notes in a session if it’s clinically useful (sometimes, I will even draw you a diagram or picture to illustrate some points), but generally, my note-taking is after the session so I can focus on you.
